Power BI - screenly/playground

Power BI is a business analytics tool from Microsoft that allows users to visualize and analyze data in a variety of ways. The Power BI Edge App is a version of Power BI that can be deployed and configured on a local network, providing a number of benefits including increased security and faster data processing.

Integration with Screenly, a digital signage solution, allows for the display of Power BI reports and dashboards on digital screens. This can be useful for providing real-time updates on key performance indicators (KPIs) or other important data to a team or organization.

There are several options for integrating Power BI with Screenly:

  1. RSS feed: Power BI can publish reports and dashboards to an RSS feed, which can then be displayed on a Screenly digital sign. This is a simple and easy-to-implement option, but it does not allow for interactive features such as drilling down into data.
  2. iFrame: Power BI reports and dashboards can be embedded in a webpage using an iFrame. This allows for more flexibility in terms of customization and interactivity, but it does require some web development skills.
  3. QR codes: A QR code can be generated for a Power BI report or dashboard, which can then be displayed on a Screenly digital sign. Users can scan the QR code with their smartphone to view the report or dashboard in the Power BI mobile app.
  4. Clock: Power BI can be used to display a custom clock on a digital sign. This can be useful for providing a clear visual indicator of the current time, and it can be combined with other Power BI visualizations to create a cohesive display.

To build, deploy, and configure the Power BI Edge App, follow these steps:

  1. Create a Power BI account: To use Power BI, you will need to create a free account at https://powerbi.microsoft.com/.
  2. Create a report or dashboard: Once you have a Power BI account, you can create a report or dashboard using your data. For more information on how to do this, see the Power BI documentation at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/.
  3. Publish the report or dashboard: After creating a report or dashboard, you can publish it to the Power BI service. This will make it available for viewing and sharing with others.
  4. Configure the Power BI Edge App: To deploy the Power BI Edge App, you will need to follow the instructions provided by Screenly. This will typically involve downloading and installing the app on a local server, and then configuring it to connect to your Power BI account and display the desired reports and dashboards.
